What SABDA Provides

The support provided by SABDA falls into the following categories:

  • Advice, sharing and support for Carers and Clients.

  • Therapeutic activities and support for Clients.

  • Information on resources/facilities.

  • Education and information sharing.

Advice, Sharing and Support

SABDA provides Carers and Clients with the opportunity to seek advice and share experiences with Health Care Professionals, the Committee and SABDA members. The means used to achieve this include:

  • Telephone support/information, available on the following helplines:

  • Referrals to other support groups or organisations better equipped (or situated) to assist the caller.

  • Monthly meetings.

  • An informative monthly newsletter and up-to date news on-line, with details of meetings, interesting developments and other relevant activities.

  • Access to the SABDA Library (members only).

  • Ongoing liaison with other organisations, groups and individuals in order to update our resource files for the benefit of Carers and Clients.

Therapeutic Activities for Clients

SABDA recognises the critical importance of therapeutic activities and skills development. To this end:

  • An art group is run at the SABDA Centre at Tara Hospital every Tuesday from 0930 to 1200. For more information contact Jill on 011 325 7167.

  • Various crafts and income-generating activities are taught in these groups, and participants enjoy the opportunity to socialise with new and old friends every Wednesday from 0930 to 1230. For more information contact Beryl on 011 883 9542.

  • Donations of materials, equipment and jumble are gratefully received to help cover costs.

SABDA has a community-based house for 7 men and women whose symptoms have stabilised. Residents are involved in running their home and have allocated duties, including preparing, cooking and serving the evening meal.
Some of the residents go out to work and have their own transport.
Applicants are required to provide SABDA with up to date reports from relevant Mental Health Care Practitioners.
Sheila Lahoud, who is a Carer herself, manages the house and lives in an adjoining flat.

Community Education and Information Sharing

Our committee and members give talks, participate in workshops and meet with members of the community (business, schools, groups or individuals) requiring information or wanting to become involved in mental health projects.
